The US budget deficit may have reached its peak under President Donald Trump, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. In an exclusive interview, Bessent expressed optimism that the deficit has likely peaked, citing efforts to implement fiscal consolidation measures.

## Budget Deficit Figures The monthly US budget deficit reached a high of $432 billion in July, the highest level in over half a decade. The fiscal year-to-date deficit climbed to almost $1.8 trillion, surpassing the same point last year. The total US government debt pile has also hit a new record above $40 trillion, more than doubling over the last decade.

The Treasury Department's announcement of an extraordinary debt buyback has sparked concerns about the country's financial health. However, Bessent remains confident that the government can grow its way out of the deficit. He emphasized that the $40 trillion debt figure is not a magical number that cannot be overcome.

## Fiscal Consolidation Efforts Bessent, along with President Trump and Russell Vought, director of the Office of Management and Budget, are working on fiscal consolidation measures to reduce the deficit. These efforts could save several hundred billion dollars, according to Bessent. The White House has also marketed its goals for broad and steep tariffs on trading partners as a way to drive revenue and shrink the national debt.

## Tariff Revenue Despite legal roadblocks, including the Supreme Court's decision to strike down many of the tariffs, Bessent expects this year's tariff revenue to be around the same level as 2025's. He noted that the revenues should not have to be refunded to companies this time, providing a potential boost to the government's finances. The administration's efforts to implement tariffs have been controversial, but Bessent remains optimistic about their potential to contribute to reducing the deficit.

The US government's debt pile and budget deficit have significant implications for the global economy, particularly in terms of capital flows and currency markets. As the US continues to navigate its fiscal challenges, the impact on the global economy will be closely watched. The Treasury Department's efforts to address the deficit and debt pile will be crucial in determining the country's financial health and its position in the global economy.
