The rising cost of living and higher borrowing costs are creating significant financial planning challenges for millions across Europe. The European economy faces the risk of entering a cycle of high inflation and high interest rates, with the European Central Bank having already raised interest rates twice in 2026.

Summit Insights on Volatility

Financial experts gathered in Athens for the International Treasury Summit emphasized the persistent uncertainty. Janet Legge, deputy chief executive of the UK-based Association of Corporate Treasurers, advised caution due to unpredictable international developments. She noted that interest rate forecasts are unreliable. "In recent years we keep hearing that interest rates are about to fall and then they go back up again," Legge said. She warned that rates will remain volatile and that the key dilemma is knowing when to make confident decisions.

The answer, she stated, lies in taking decisions based on adequate information, realistic planning, and enough flexibility to adapt. Gilles Bonn-Long, an executive in corporate cash management, linked rising living costs to international geopolitical developments. He warned that costs for petrol, diesel, and goods could continue to rise in the short term. Businesses face parallel uncertainty in product prices, financing costs, raw material supply, and investment planning.

Ralf Kesten of a German company specializing in working capital management noted that higher interest rates have increased business operating costs and pressured liquidity. Experts agree that this uncertainty requires preparation. Businesses should identify risks early and plan responses.

Consumer Guidance Amid Rising Prices

Households are advised to track spending carefully and distinguish essential from adjustable expenses to manage rising costs of essentials like energy and fuel. Bonn-Long advised consumers to practice careful management of spending by tracking outgoings and planning purchases carefully. He recommended distinguishing between essential expenses, such as housing and energy, and adjustable expenses.

Analysts do not rule out a further rate rise by the European Central Bank before the end of the year. For businesses, Bonn-Long stressed the importance of hedging strategies, including interest rate swaps, to limit exposure to rising variable interest rates. Implementing such strategies can mitigate floating rate risk. Consumers and businesses should implement careful spending tracking and hedging strategies to manage ongoing financial uncertainty.
