The World Trade Organization's Goods Trade Barometer has risen to 102.0. This reading, released in September 2026, is above the baseline trend and higher than the previous figure of 101.7 recorded in June.
Strong demand for electronic components linked to artificial intelligence investment is helping to offset negative impacts from the conflict in the Middle East. The barometer's composite reading above 100 indicates that the volume of world trade is currently exceeding its recent trend.
Component Indices Show Strength
All but one of the barometer's component indices are currently above the 100 baseline. The electronic components index showed the strongest performance at 104.9. The export orders index, considered highly predictive of future trade, strengthened to 103.5.
International air freight and agricultural raw materials indices also rose firmly above trend, reaching 102.8 and 102.6 respectively. The automotive products index registered a more modest increase to 101.5. Only the container shipping index dipped slightly below trend at 99.6.

WTO Forecasts and Scenarios
The WTO Secretariat's most recent Global Trade Outlook and Statistics report was issued on 19 March 2026. That report forecast growth in world merchandise trade volume of 1.9% in 2026 under a baseline scenario. Under a high-energy-price scenario, reflecting headwinds from the Middle East conflict, growth was forecast at 1.4%.
The report noted that sustained investment in AI could add 0.5 percentage points to merchandise trade growth. Year-on-year growth in the volume of world merchandise trade remained positive in the first quarter of 2026.
Data Lags and Future Updates
Trade disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz are expected to be more fully captured in trade data for the second quarter. Figures for this period are not yet available. An update to the Global Trade Outlook and Statistics report will be published in October.
The WTO states that the Goods Trade Barometer is a composite leading indicator for merchandise trade. It provides an early indication of the trajectory of world trade relative to recent trends. The latest data suggests trade continues to gain momentum.
