Tim Cook will step down as Apple's chief executive on September 1, 2026, according to a report from MarketWatch. The outgoing CEO, often dismissed as 'not a product guy,' built a $3 trillion empire through mastery of supply chains and operations.

Cook's tenure saw Apple become the first company to reach market capitalizations of $1 trillion, then $2 trillion and $3 trillion. Since he took the helm, Apple's shares have rallied over 2,200%, the company has sold more than 3 billion iPhones, and it has returned nearly $900 billion to shareholders via stock buybacks.

The Cook Doctrine

Cook's management philosophy, later termed the 'Cook Doctrine,' emphasized embedded corporate values of excellence, self-honesty, and courage to change. He articulated this early in 2009 while temporarily leading the company for an ailing Steve Jobs. Cook stated that regardless of who held which job, those values would ensure Apple did 'extremely well.'

His operational focus was evident from the start of his Apple career in 1998. He left a vice president role at Compaq Computer, then the world's largest PC maker, to join a nearly bankrupt Apple. His first actions involved clearing warehouses of unsold inventory and trimming the supplier list.

A Different Leadership Style

Critics, including Steve Jobs himself, labeled Cook as 'not a product guy.' MarketWatch notes that skeptics have complained he plays it too safe, lacking the charisma and vision of his predecessor. Cook, a quiet and reserved man from Alabama, embraced these traits as strengths.

His leadership style was collaborative, a stark contrast to Steve Jobs. Todd Dailey, a former Apple employee of over 20 years, told MarketWatch that Cook's way of running things 'was different than Steve, who was not a collaborator.' Cook is known for hosting grueling, hours-long meetings filled with endless follow-up questions.

The Workaholic's Routine

A self-described 'workaholic,' Cook famously wakes at 4 a.m. to read customer and employee emails. He then hits the gym before badging into Apple Park, assuming he is not traveling for diplomatic meetings or supply-chain audits. He is more likely to be found touring manufacturing plants than in Apple's design studio.

As CEO, Cook expanded his role from forecasting demand to orchestrating smooth integration across Apple's growing empire of products and services. Neither Cook nor Apple representatives returned MarketWatch requests for comment for the report.

Cook's personality was displayed during a technical demo for a senior government official involving the Vcommunicator device, set up by former employee Todd Dailey.
